This is not just a Christmas Story. This story is appropriate for reading all year long. Events at the time of Jesus' birth fit together in God's great plan to save the world. Because of the Roman census, Mary was in Bethlehem when Jesus was born. God sent His angels to announce the birth of Jesus to lowly shepherds. His star in the heavens led Wise Men from distant lands to the cradle of the Savior. Even the work of His opponents became a part of His plan. King Herod, afraid that the new King of the Jews might be a strong rival, persuaded the Wise Men to promise to tell where Jesus could be found. God kept His plan by sending them home another way. When angry Herod ordered his men to kill all boys under age 2, God warned Joseph to take Jesus and mary on the secret journey to Egypt. He spared Jesus from the cruel death of Bethlehem's children. Later He call Joseph, Mary, and Jesus back, as He had called His people Israel out of Egypt at the time of Moses. Joseph led his family back to Nazareth, their old hometown in Galilee, after he learned that Herodd's son was the new ruler in Judea. These events of the secret journey were part of God's plan to send His Son to live, suffer, die, and rise again as the Savior of all men.
