The Mount of Purification is a set of addresses which Dr. Underhill delivered at the Pleshey Retreat. She proceeds on an alagy with Dante's Purgatorio, and each successful round of the struggle with one's own temperament takes one to a higher terrace on the Mount of Purification and nearer to the perfect life dedicated to the service of God. Thus drawn by the love of God rather than forced by His justice, we are shown that the way lies in shedding of pride and self-sufficiency and the attainment of the spirit of humility and thanksgiving; in the conquest of anger and the attainment of tranquility. Then toleration and love of men will displace envy and meanness of spirit, personal desires will be sunk in the Ocean of God's love, and having acquired a zest for life which will make us gladly accept our lot however humble, we shall find ourselves cleansed at the summit of the Mount of Purification.

Dr. Underhill is never condescending, and her sermons show a delightful sense of humour and a true insight into the problems of day-to-day life which many Christians will find of far greater relevance to their difficulties than writings of greater erudition or abstract.
