In his introduction, the author discusses the writing of the Gospel and the background against which it was written; he emaphasises the striking combination of Jewish-Christian atmosphere and world mission, and the outstanding aim of St. Matthew as a teer to serve the Chruch. He suggest that too sharp a distinction may have been made hitherto between the Church and the Kingdom, pointing out the significnce of the Old Testment passages quoted and the Parables reported. His fresh translation complements his lucid commentary in expounding and clarifying the Gospel. For this second edition numerous minor corrections have been made and, in partcular, the biblography has been completely revised and reset.
